Why does voting for president matter if you also vote for delegates?

I'm from New York, so I see two areas on my ballot. The candidate vote, and the delegate vote. AFAIK, the delegates all get together to pick the president, so you should vote for the 6 delegates that match the candidate you want to be president.

So, if that's the case, what am I voting for when I vote for president? Is that section of the ballot just there so that people can say "XXX won YY% of the vote"? Does that section of the ballot actually determine anything?
