Policy Question: If a Federal Jobs Guarantee goes into effect, what happens to the economy during a federal shutdown?

Random facts regarding federal shutdowns:

  • 13 federal shutdowns since 1981
  • The most recent shutdown in 2018/2019 was 35 days (even throughout the Christmas holiday) with an estimated loss of $ 11 billion.
    • ~800,00 federal employees (380,000 on furloughed pay, the rest working without pay)
    • Furloughed pay puts an estimated 60% of employees at risk of missing rent and bills as most Americans can't pay for an unexpected $ 400/500 bill

To my understanding, a FJG would substantially increase the number of federal employees, putting more families at risk during a federal shutdown.

Let’s say Sanders becomes president, and his “free tuition for public colleges/universities” plan takes into effect. Would that affect acceptance rates at all?

For example, for universities like UC Berkeley, UT Austin, Michigan, UNC, Georgia Tech, etc., wouldn’t acceptance rates lower DRASTICALLY? Since more people would be applying, bit they can only bring in a certain number of students at a time?

EDIT: And this would raise admission requirements, right? Higher SAT/ACT scores, higher GPA, etc., higher than these universities already have, which are already extremely competitive.

Bernie: I’m not much into all these speculations and all these polls. One day a poll has me doing great, the next day a poll has me doing terrible. But at the end of the day, I think we’re going to win, because we have an extraordinary grass-roots movement.

That quote is from another poor article from Wapo published today (link is below). The quote is already pushing max length for a title so here's the full quote that has one extra line:

“I'm not much into all these speculations and all these polls,” Sanders said. “One day a poll has me doing great, the next day a poll has me doing terrible. It has a lot to do with who you're polling and what questions you're asking. But at the end of the day, I think we're going to win, because we have an extraordinary grass-roots movement.”

(Not a real conversation but want to supply potential talking points
when we hear this same argument over and over again)
"I'd never vote for a communist socialist."
That's funny, neither would I! So we can agree. 🙂
"You say that but you support an oh, excuse me: 'democratic' socialist."
I know you probably hear this a lot but those things really aren't the same.
"Enlighten me on how they are different."
I don't see too many people comparing Canada or Sweden to Venezuela.
Canada and Sweden by the way, are doing many levels better on the SPI and SDP scales than the US.

"The heck is the SPI scale"
Glad you asked: https://www.socialprogress.org/?tab=2&code=USA
By the we have an agreement as part of the United Nations to have things such as Medicare for All
by 2030: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sustainable_Development_Goals
(THAT'S why btw Kamala's plan probably takes ten years. That's as long as we can forgo it lol)

The Bernie episode on Joe Rogans podcast is now the 8th most viewed episode of JRE at 8.3 million views! Do you think we can share that video enough to get it to 13.5 million and pass Ben Shapiro to get into 3rd place all time!? Let’s atleast try! #FeelTheBern

I know it might be cheesy but that video has brought a lot of centrists to our side and I think it would add some cache to Bernie’s starpower and it’ll motivate him to get on more long form podcasts!
