Should Bernie use a different term to describe his political position?

I'm a huge fan of Sanders and agree with him on 99% of the issues (literally, I took a huge quiz on it and only disagreed with him on a technicality regarding min wage). But I think one of his major problems is how he calls himself a "democratic socialist".

The first thing that pops up on Google when I search democratic socialism is: "Democratic socialism is a political philosophy that advocates political democracy alongside social ownership of the means of production with an emphasis on self-management and democratic management of economic institutions within a market or some form of decentralized planned socialist economy".

This leads to people like my dad saying "Bernie is a socialist! I could never vote for him". And some people in general arguing against him by saying he wants social ownership over the means of production. However, that's not even what he wants. What he really means to say is that he's a social Democrat: "Social democracy is a political, social and economic ideology that supports economic and social interventions to promote social justice within the framework of a liberal democratic polity and capitalist economy". It's very far to the left, but still within a capitalist framework. This more accurately describes his position and doesn't confuse people into thinking he supports policies he doesn't. I think he, and other progressives using the term democratic socialism should switch to calling themselves social Democrats OR dictionary definitions should edit the terms in order to align with how modern politicians use it.

The thing non-Bernie fans need to understand about us Bernie supporters. We support Bernie, not because of a cult of personality, but because Bernie is nearly one of the only politicians out there fighting for political positions we strongly believe in.

You remove Bernie and the passion for those issues are the same. It's not about Bernie. Bernie just shares the passion of millions of Americans. It's about medicare for all. It's about worker's rights. It's about a better minimum wage. It's about universal college education. It's about less war. It's about a better America rather than the status quo. It's about an America for the people and not for the corporations.

Zogby: Palestinian rights are the measure of a politician’s strength of character, integrity, & ability to resist political pressure. When asked about Palestinians, you can see & feel most politicos panic or say what they’ve been told to say. This issue sets Bernie apart. He’s strong.
